Card Schemes: Card issuing networks

Card schemes are payment networks linked to payment cards in which a financial institution can become a member. The member gets rights to issue cards operating on the network of that card scheme. We have outlined some major card schemes with their respective IIN/BIN ranges in the section below.

Visa

Visa Inc. is an American multinational financial services corporation headquartered in Foster City, California, United States.

Visa does not issue cards, extend credit or set rates and fees for consumers; rather, Visa provides financial institutions with Visa-branded payment products that they then used to offer credit, debit, prepaid and cash-access programs to their customers.

MasterCard

Mastercard Incorporated is an American multinational financial services corporation headquartered in Purchase, New York, United States.

Mastercard Worldwide has been a publicly traded company since 2006. Prior to its initial public offering, Mastercard Worldwide was a cooperative owned by the more than 25,000 financial institutions that issue its branded cards.

IIN ranges are 222100 - 272099 and 510000 - 559999 both with primary account number (Pan) length 16.

Maestro

Maestro is a brand of debit cards and prepaid cards owned by Mastercard that was introduced in 1991. Maestro debit cards are obtained from associate banks and are linked to the cardholder's current account while prepaid cards do not require a bank account to operate.

Maestro cards can be used at point of sale (POS) and ATMs. Payments are made by swiping cards through the payment terminal, insertion into a chip and PIN device or by a contactless reader.

American Express

The American Express Company (Amex) is an American multinational financial services corporation headquartered at 200 Vesey Street in New York City. The company was founded in 1850 and is one of the 30 components of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

The company is best known for its charge card, credit card, and traveler's cheque businesses.

Card ranges are 340000 - 349999 and 370000 - 379999 and pan length is 15 digits.

Discover Global Network

Discover Financial Services is an American financial services company that owns and operates Discover Bank, which offers checking and savings accounts, personal loans, home equity loans, student loans and credit cards.

Discover Cards

Discover is a payment cards scheme issued primarily in the United States. It was introduced by Sears in 1985.

When launched, Discover did not charge an annual fee and offered a higher-than-normal credit limit, features that were disruptive to the existing credit card industry.

Diners Club International (DCI)is a charge card company owned by Discover Financial Services. Formed in 1950 it was the first independent payment card company in the world, and it established the concept of a self-sufficient company producing credit cards for travel and entertainment. Diners Club International and its franchises serve individuals from around the globe with operations in 59 countries.

Japan Credit Bureau (JCB)

JCB Co., Ltd. is a payment card company based in Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 1961 as Japan Credit Bureau, JCB established itself in the Japanese credit card market when it purchased Osaka Credit Bureau in 1968.
As of 2020 its cards are issued to 130 million customers in 23 countries.

UnionPay also known as China UnionPay or by its abbreviation, CUP or UPI internationally, is a Chinese financial services corporation headquartered in Shanghai, China. It provides bank card services and a major card scheme in mainland China. Founded on 26 March 2002, China UnionPay is an association for China's banking card industry, operating under the approval of the People's Bank of China.

RuPay

RuPay is a domestic card payment service conceived and launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on 26 March 2012. It was created to fulfil the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) vision of establishing a domestic, open and multilateral system of payments.

RuPay facilitates electronic payment at all Indian banks and financial institutions. NPCI maintains ties with Discover Financial, JCB to enable RuPay card scheme to gain international acceptance.

Elo

Elo is a Brazilian card association founded in 2011 by a holding company formed by three financial services companies: Banco Bradesco, Banco do Brasil, and Caixa Econômica Federal.

Elo offers financial services, including credit card, debit card, and prepaid card issuing and network processing.

BC Card is South Korea's biggest payment processing company and local brand network headquartered in Seoul, South Korea.

The company provides end-to-end payment services primarily to financial institutions as well as to merchants.

Troy

Troy is a Turkish card scheme founded in 2015 by the Interbank Card Center.It is the only domestic card scheme in Turkey.

Troy offers financial services, including credit card, debit card, and prepaid card issuing and network processing. Since 2017, Troy cards have been accepted in the United States on the Discover Card network.

MIR

Mir is a Russian multinational financial services corporation headquartered in Moscow, Russia. It facilitates electronic funds transfers based on the national payment system established by the Central Bank of Russia by the law adopted on May 1, 2017.

Mir does not issue cards, extend credit or set rates and fees for consumers; rather, Mir provides financial institutions with Mir-branded payment products that they then use to offer credit, debit, or other programs to their customers.
